Lunchtime Lecture

Lunchtime Lecture: “From GovHack Submission to fully implemented commercial product”, REVISED DATE: 25 May 2017

It’s the one you’ve been waiting for!  We’re pleased to announce that we have a revised date for this highly relevant Lunchtime Lecture, Thursday 25 May from 12.30-1.30pm (please note this is half an hour later than our usual kick off time).

The annual GovHack event which now spans Australia and New Zealand is growing in impact, year on year.  But is it possible to convert a great submission into a fully implemented commercial product?

This lunchtime lecture will discuss how it became a reality for this Aussie team as they step through the success story behind IPNOVA.  Learn how an individual developer’s idea is now transforming IP Australia’s data accessibility.

IPNOVA, released in October 2016 is a free, open web app that makes intellectual property accessible to the general public. The end product was a result of a collaborative cooperation between IP Australia, the Department of Industry Innovation and Science and Servian, as the delivery partner.

IP Australia has a large amount of bibliographic data as they administer patents, trademarks, designs and plant breeder’s rights in Australia. However this data has been difficult to navigate, search and ultimately hard to wield into something useful…

In 2015, IP Australia ran a GovHack challenge to see what could be achieved with their data. This event awarded a series of bounties and prizes to ‘Neuron’, which is essentially a visualisation of links between patents and the brainchild of Servian consultant. Ultimately, IP Australia engaged Servian to bring this concept to life. The result is a tool that provides statistics on patents, trademarks and other industry related data in a visually comprehensive way.  It encourages innovation; individuals, businesses and researchers can access the information they need for planning, R&D, market insights and collaborations.
