There are three streams to our Data 101 training series:

  1. Data clean up using Open Refine
  2. Web Scraping
  3. Intro to relational database management

Who is this for?

The Data 101 Training Series is ideal for those starting to advance towards the Practitioner level of the ODI’s Open Data Skills Framework.

It is suitable for researchers, government employees, educators, consultants, policy workers, students, artists, analysts and anyone who wants to explore what data can do for them.

What prior knowledge do you need?

The workshop is designed for non-specialists. No previous data or statistical skills are required; however, comfort with using the web and good computer literacy is essential.

  • More details will be provided on pre-installing software before the workshop.

Our Trainers

Belinda Weaver

Belinda Weaver (QCIF) is an experienced Software Carpentry instructor and Internet trainer.  She recently coordinated the Mozilla Science Global Sprint on Library Carpentry, working with over 20 people from six countries to update the material, some of which has been repurposed for this workshop.

Hoylen Sue (QCIF) is a Data Specialist and experienced instructor. He has over 26 years of experience in the information technology industry, with roles ranging from developer through to technical architect and researcher. His first job was working on a Brisbane-based software company’s relational database product, and he is still using SQLite in his job today. He is impressed by how useful it is, and hopes you will benefit from knowing a tool that has stood the test of time.
